There’s a lot you can pick up about Lucy from her introduction that later contributes to her character in the rest of the book. Her reading her own face and being proud that Seward can’t easily. Her gushing about Arthur and then immediately saying that if she thinks about it too much she’ll rip up the letter. Two hints that show she doesn’t like people knowing the real her and how she’s really feeling. A trait that doesn’t do her well going forward.

Racism in Dracula:

All the people were a bit ugly and very quaint but so kindhearted and the Slovaks were a bit more barbaric than most but I am told harmless and they had big hats

Racism in the Beetle:

I couldn't tell if the thing on the bed was a man or a woman but it was definitely a FOREIGNER. He was hideously ugly and BRIGHT YELLOW and had no chin at all. He was probably a woman but no woman could be so horrible.
